Red Cardinal Facts The Northern Cardinal gets its name from the red robes used by cardinals in the Roman Catholic Church. Cardinals have become increasingly common in northern areas, perhaps as a result of global warming. This adaptable bird breeds and winters in the same place.
Look For:
The male is bright red with a black face, feathered red crest, and a cone-shaped red bill. The female has a pink bill and is grayish with dull red on crest, wings, and tail.
Length:
The Northern Cardinal measures 8-9".
Habitat:
Woods, shrubbery, parks, gardens.
Range:
Eastern U.S. and west to Arizona.
